Police in the Aswa West Region are investigating a suspected case of suicide by hanging involving a 52-year-old businesswoman in Gulu City.
According to the Aswa West Regional Police Spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong, the incident occurred on March 1, 2026, at about 11:00am in Tegwana Cell, Laroo-Pece Division.
The deceased has been identified as Nambooze Claire, a 52-year-old resident of Tegwana Cell and a businesswoman.
The case was reported later that day at about 5:00pm at Gulu Central Police Station by her husband, Christopher Oola, 59, a carpenter and resident of the same area.
Preliminary findings indicate that Nambooze left her home in the morning to attend to her business as usual.
However, at around 11:00am, she reportedly informed a neighboring trader to continue selling her stock until 4:00pm.
According to the police report, the deceased neighbour became concerned and later discovered that she had taken her own life by hanging.
Close relatives told police that the deceased had accumulated loans from four different microfinance institutions amounting to six million shillings. Family members believe she had been under significant financial pressure to repay the debts, which could have contributed to her decision.
Police registered the case of suspected suicide under Gulu CPS SD Reference 34/01/03/2026.
The scene was visited by the Officer in Charge of the station, CID officers, Scene of Crime Officers, and the homicide team. Relevant statements have been recorded from eyewitnesses and close relatives.
This publication ha also established that no arrest have been made in connection with the incident.
The deceased body was conveyed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examination as investigations continue.
Police have urged members of the public to seek support from family, friends, or relevant authorities when facing overwhelming challenges, noting that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
